Operating Principle of Piston Vacuum Pumps:

In piston vacuum pumps, one or more pistons move reciprocally in cylinders, similar to a combustion engine. During the downward stroke, gas is drawn in through an inlet valve; during the upward stroke, it is compressed and expelled through an outlet valve. Oil serves for sealing, lubrication, and cooling of the moving parts. The two-stage design (DK series) uses two pistons in series for deeper ultimate vacuum.

When Are Piston Pumps the Best Choice?

Leybold E/DK piston pumps are ideal when the following conditions exist:

  • ✓ High dust or particle load in the process
  • ✓ Aggressive or corrosive gases
  • ✓ Frequent condensable vapors (with gas ballast)
  • ✓ Extremely robust pump required
  • ✓ Long service life more important than low maintenance
  • ✓ Harsh industrial environment
  • ✓ Continuous operation under tough conditions

Piston Pumps vs. Rotary Vane Pumps:

CriterionPiston Pump (E/DK)Rotary Vane Pump
Contamination Tolerance ✓✓ Very high ○ Low (vane wear)
Particle Resistance ✓✓ Excellent ✗ Problematic
Aggressive Gases ✓ Very good ○ Conditionally
Durability ✓✓ Extremely durable ✓ Good
Maintenance ○ More complex ✓ Simpler
Noise Level ○ Higher (pulsation) ✓ Quieter
Vibration ○ Higher ✓ Lower
Operating Costs ○ Higher (oil consumption) ✓ Lower
Investment Costs ○ Higher ✓ Lower

E-Series vs. DK-Series - Which is Right?

PropertyE-Series (Single-Stage)DK-Series (Two-Stage)
Ultimate Vacuum ○ 0.05 mbar ✓ 0.0005 mbar
Application Rough vacuum, backing pump High vacuum applications
Complexity ✓ Simpler ○ More complex
Price ✓ Lower ○ Higher
Energy Consumption ✓ Lower ○ Higher
